The Reality Check Business Owners Need
Most business owners are confident about the companies they’ve built—but when it comes to the future, hope is not a plan. The 2025 MassMutual Business Owner Perspectives Study reveals an uncomfortable truth: while owners are optimistic, most are underprepared for succession, risk management, and exit planning.
In this article, we’ll explore what the study uncovered, why it matters, and how business owners can shift from being “hopeful” to truly prepared.
What the MassMutual Study Found
MassMutual surveyed 819 established business owners across the U.S. representing industries from manufacturing to professional services. These are mature, profitable businesses—not startups.
The headline:
- Most business owners do not have an exit plan.
- Many have not minimized risk.
- Too few treat their business as a transferable asset.
And here’s the undeniable fact: 100% of business owners will exit someday—by choice or by force.
The Four Questions Every Business Owner Must Answer
The study highlights four critical questions. Every business owner should sit with these and answer honestly:
- Is Your Business Always Ready to Sell?
Only 9% of owners have set an exit timeline. Just 21% have identified potential buyers, and 38% have obtained a valuation. If something unexpected happened tomorrow—would your business survive without you?
- Do You Own a Business or Just a Job?
If customers depend on you personally and you can’t step away for more than 48 hours, you don’t own a business—you own a job. While 71% of owners want independence, only 29% have built systems that allow it.
- Are You Focused on Value or Income?
Lifestyle businesses generate income today. Value-focused businesses build transferable wealth for tomorrow. Yet 55% of owners are relying on the sale of their business for retirement—without confirming if the numbers add up.
- Have You Minimized Risk?
Risk comes in many forms:
- Personal risk (family protection)
- Business risk (company survival without you)
- Future risk (outliving your money)
- Team risk (retaining top talent)
While most owners acknowledge these risks, few take action. For example, only 56% have life insurance, and just 36% have named a successor.
Why Exit Planning Is Smart Business
Exit planning isn’t just about selling. It’s about:
- Creating options for the future
- Protecting your family and employees
- Closing your wealth gap between what you have and what you’ll need
- Building a company that runs smoothly—with or without you
When you run your business like it’s always ready to sell, you create freedom. Freedom to leave, grow, or simply sleep better at night.
The Five D’s That Can Derail Any Business
The study reinforces the importance of planning for the unexpected:
- Death
- Disability
- Divorce
- Departure
- Disqualification
Without a current, funded buy-sell agreement, any of these can trigger chaos. Too many agreements are outdated or unfunded—leaving owners and families exposed.
